The Cunning and Wit of a Boy Named Kit

There lived a young boy, in a faraway land, he had little money, yet his spirit was grand.

He worked for a farmer who’d nicknamed

him ‘Kit’, and was known around town for

his courage and wit.

One day an old man with a contemplative

frown, spotted young Kit on the outskirts of

town.

He asked him his name to which Kit replied

“My name is Christopher, and it’s here I

reside.”

“Then you are the lad I have come here to

see. Listen here boy, you have a great destiny.

Do you fear dragons? I fear I must ask, as you have been chosen for a dangerous task.”

Despite Kit’s confusion the old man went on, “The creature’s entrapped the people of Huron.

They need a brave hero to rescue them all, that hero is you Kit, will you answer their call?”

Kit shuffled his feet and looked up at the man, “But why pick me sir? I don’t understand.”

“Young boy I’m afraid there’s not time to explain, you must make up your mind and be on your way.

But don’t be afraid I know what you need, I’ve prepared all the weapons to ensure you succeed.”

With that the old man pulled from under his cloak, a sleek silver sword and a shield made of oak.

At the latter Kit frowned, it hardly seemed useful, but he accepted it anyway, with a feeling most unusual.

Kit made for Huron the very next day and found himself standing in the mayor’s doorway.

He explained his mission and why he had come, and was surprised to find the mayor looking so glum.

“You see young Christopher,” the old mayor murmured, “many heroes have tried, and all have been murdered,

I’m afraid it’s no use, you’ve come here for nothing,” and with that he turned away with a spirit most crushing.

But Kit was determined, he would not be perturbed, the dragon was waiting and he had a duty to serve.

He clambered the mountain where the dragon was dwelling, and the sight that he saw was most certainly chilling.

There was a cage in the corner of dark freezing lair, but the dragon himself didn’t seem to be there.

Kit crossed with great caution, as quite as a mouse, to the other side of the great dragons house.

From the cage he heard voices, all trembling and scared, indeed they were the village folk locked in the small space they shared.

“I’ve come here to save you, and set you all free, the first step, I think, is to locate the key.”

But as Kit looked for a key in the darkness, there was a shift in the air with remarkable starkness.

The whole cavern echoed with a great mighty roar, into the cave the fierce dragon soared.

Kit ducked for shelter, but it was too late I fear, the dragon had seen him, and started to sneer.

Kit stood up to face him, he was not one to yield, so he readied his sword and his odd wooden shield.

What good would wood do against a great dragon’s flame? But the old man had assured him, so he held it out just the same.

Kit held his breath as the dragon swooped down, cries of fear came from the people of the town.

It landed before him and the ground beneath shook, Kit tried not to tremble before the dragons fierce look.

It took a breath in with a loud roaring huff, and out came fire, too magnificent to snuff.

Kit spied a large boulder and behind it did dive, he made it to shelter only just in time.

Fast of thinking was our cunning young man, as he started to form the beginnings of a plan.

Kit stood and emerged from his natural shelter, and called to the dragon, like a pig to the slaughter.

The dragon lunged forward and widened its jaw, he was going to swallow Kit, silver sword and all!

Kit raised his shield and ducked underneath it, the dragon bit in and it shattered to pieces.

The wooden shield fractured into many sharp bits, but really quite brilliant was this idea of Kits.

See, inside its mouth it contracted a splinter, the dragon reeled back and started to whimper.

When he tried then to breath no fire would come out, for he couldn’t quite spit the wooden chips out.

And now Kit could see he had gained an advantage, with the dragon subdued he could deal some real damage.

I’ll save you the rest cause this part is quite gory, but to sum it right up Kit was the victor of this story.

So what good does this tale hold in it for you, believe me that you will face dragons too.

When you meet your challenge and find yourself scared, remember your weapons were carefully prepared.

At first these tools may not entirely make sense, but you’ll put them to use out there on your quest.

You have what you need to rise up and win, so what are you waiting for, it’s time to begin!
